Breaking the Chains of Limitations

“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed…”--2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (KJV)

It’s easy to feel pressed down by personal limitations. It’s just as simple to get the sense of being buried by the trauma in our environment. Luckily, we can still survive and thrive. This article will explore three people who shattered physical boundaries:

Mephibosheth (the grandson of King Saul)

The book of 2 Samuel tells this inspiring story. Mephibosheth was dropped by his nurse at the age of five, when they were fleeing from King David’s forces. As a result, he became crippled for life. He was the grandson of a former king, but he was raised in poverty and obscurity.

When Mephibosheth was older, King David gave him a home in his palace. The monarch also restored the boy’s rightful inheritance.

Ed Sheeran (British, b. 1991)

Singer, songwriter, record producer, musician, and actor—net worth $65 million
Successes:
  • Eight Grammys and four Grammy nominations
  • Duets with top celebrities of the music world
  • Movie soundtracks
  • One of the first to leverage social media for his career (2010)
  • Sold 1 million tickets for his upcoming tour—so far

Limitations Overcome:
  • Bullied due to ginger (red) hair and thick glasses
  • Lazy eye due to a surgery gone wrong
  • Social insecurity
  • Severe speech problems
  • Slept in parks or in the subway at the beginning of his career

Andrea Bocelli (Italian, b. 1958)

(Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer—net worth $40 million

Successes:

How long a list do you want? This man has been a legend for decades. Bocelli has performed with the leading musicians of the pop and opera world. His credits would fill pages.  Here are some fellow celebrity reviews I found on Google:
  • Celine Dion introduced him in her 1998 Christmas special by saying that if God had a singing voice, he would sound like Andrea Bocelli.
  • Record producer David Foster often describes Bocelli’s voice as the most beautiful in the world.

Limitations Overcome:

Doctors advised his parents to abort him; he was likely to be born with severe disabilities. Early in life, he had congenital glaucoma. The opera/crossover star became completely blind at age 12 following an accident in a football game.
